Amped 3: Not A Cheap Trick
December 13, 2007 | Filed Under Game Reviews | No Comments
Tricks, tricks, and more tricks. Amped 3 is a tricked out newcomer to the snowboarding genre. Once you’ve tricked your snow boarder out in all of the tricky gear, you can get started. Get the picture? The other snow boarding series is more about racing so Amped 3 is a good counterpoint. You will be taken through a series of challenges on the various mountains so that you can learn new skills gradually and amass points as you travel through the terrain.
The one outstanding feature of Amped 3 is the soundtrack. Perfectly matched with the action and the story line, the music injects even more excitement into the game. Instead of going for the obvious known tracks, some relatively unknown artists are featured and it pays off. Voice work is solid throughout with a range of accents and intonations complementing the various stories. The stories are interesting and intricate. You will encounter ninjas, yeti, and some strange Mexican mayonnaise. Intrigued?
The artistic cleverness of the multimedia approach leads to some great moments in cut scenes, menus, and game play. It seems as if nothing in the artistic style bag is out of bounds and the director uses a pastiche of influences and references to tremendous advantage. Asides to Yellow Submarine, Final Fantasy, comic books, and real footage are scattered throughout and reliving those moments is like seeing great bits from movies repeatedly; you don’t get tired of them.
As an added bonus, you can travel with snowmobiles and sleds to make the game more interesting. Amped 3 is a great addition to the Amped series. This game gets a tricky thumbs up.
