Avatar: The Last Airbender—The Burning Earth; A Renter

December 13, 2007 | Filed Under Game Reviews |

If you are not a Nickelodeon watcher, you will probably not be aware of this series. Avatar: The Last Airbender has been a popular children’s show and has been adapted to a video game (naturally.) The back story is not really necessary as this is a straightforward shoot-em up game that doesn’t delve into the reasons for any of the main characters’ actions. If you don’t expect too much complexity, The Burning Earth installment will be moderately pleasing. The martial arts aspect of the Avatar series allows for a limited variety of kicks, jumps, blocks, etc. but does allow for some interesting bad guys as you fight your way through your mission of saving the earth from the Fire Nation.

Starting in the second season of the TV show, Avatar: The Last Airbender has plenty of occasions to engage the evil members of the Fire Nation, but doesn’t satisfy the experienced gamer as the moves are so easy and basic that you gather points too readily. This game seems aimed at the younger gamer and as such, has enough variety and complexity to keep that market happy. The somewhat washed out graphics are similar to the show and the stiffness of the characters’ movement is quite pronounced. Single player mode is the predominant way to play but you can be joined by one other player, which seems almost unnecessary.

This title, Avatar: The Last Airbender—The Burning Earth, is a renter. Don’t put out your money here as you will grow weary of the repetitive nature of the game play.
