Bee Movie Game: Jerry on the Spot

As in all games based on cartoons, the aesthetic danger lies in falling short of the graphic standard set by the original. The Bee Movie Game looks, feels, and most important, sounds like the movie. When Barry B. Benson grows restless in his hive world, you are actually hearing Jerry Seinfeld voice the part. Beenox (the maker) did not make the mistake of substituting a sound alike; this would have been a disaster. The animation is right on the mark and the story takes up where Barry has completed the movie’s mission and is being interviewed for his pioneering celebrity status.
Once Barry makes his way out of Hive City (not before a few lampposts are leveled and honeycombs are collected), the real fun starts. The environments are more varied and expansive outside the hive and allow for more encounters with wasps and the like that you can shoot down with some active button mashing. You fly around trying to suck pollen out of healthy flowers and injecting it into failing flowers. You can still collect the little hidden honey treats scattered about and then WHAM! it begins to rain—poison to a bee.
What to do? Use your exceedingly keen bee reflexes to slow down the raindrops and dodge around them long enough to get to a safe spot, that’s what. In addition, when confronted with dangerous wasps, Barry can use his Bee Vision to highlight them in pink as well as spot some points of interest as contrasted from the purple aura generated much like night vision goggles. The transition from the Bee Vision to normal viewing is a bit disconcerting but the confusion is momentary.
The Bee Movie Game is a hoot for everyone whether you have seen the source material or not. The ability to fly around where you like is worth the price of admission.
