Blitz: The League—Unlicensed and Over the Top

December 30, 2007 | Filed Under Game Reviews |

You can bet that the real NFL stars are playing this thinly disguised, unlicensed version of pro football, as we all know it actually occurs. Midway has gone ahead without the previous licensing agreement with the NFL so attempts have been made to accentuate features other than the player recognition factor. Potty mouthed trash talk, sexual side games, and player hi-jinks on and off the field are some of the over the top features Blitz: The League trots out for your indulgence.

In fact, the story is more the focus here than the actual play but that is not to say that the bruise inducing collisions and kamikaze tackles are not a ton of fun.

Game play doesn’t take itself too seriously but retains enough football acumen in the eight-man team set-up to make Blitz: The League an enjoyable time. The use of a slow motion device (Clash) gives your receivers the capability to make some amazing grabs and your defenders the chance to do some incredible damage. Some of the cut scenes are especially amusing with cheerleaders exposing skin and trainers wielding enormous syringes to administer steroids on the sidelines. Blitz: The League is a game that goes for the hype and gets it.

Player representations are very well done and player movement surmounts the mechanical look that so many sports games demonstrate. All in all, Blitz: The League is an effective send-up of some of the issues in pro football while maintaining a sensible amount of football realism.
