Blue Dragon: Draggin’ the Blues

December 30, 2007 | Filed Under Game Reviews | No Comments

Blue Dragon is a reasonable extension of Final Fantasy from the Japanese RPG library. There really is nothing new about this nine-character game except perhaps the assignment of class skill sets to each character. Graphics are what has been seen before, quite along the lines of anime. The Xbox 360 platform is underutilized and the story line is less than compelling.

In addition, the game comes on three DVDs, which becomes unwieldy even though you may take 50 hours to get through the entire game.

Character personalities come from stock personae and become almost interchangeable because you can assign any of the skill sets to any of them.

One feature that Blue Dragon possesses is a lack of random enemy encounters. Surprise battles are one part of RPGs that are irritating. You will see the upcoming foes around the background and can be prepared for their particular talents in advance.

As befitting a Microsoft application, the game experiences slowdowns at various points. Almost every object you come across has some hidden baubles so you can amass a load of goodies that come in handy throughout the game. Unfortunately because of this accumulation, the game is rather easy even into the last disc.

For a JRPG, Blue Dragon is somewhat satisfactory but could stand some tweaking of content and some toughening up. It is much too long to be so simple to play.
