Crackdown: Addicts Only

January 7, 2008 | Filed Under Game Reviews | No Comments

Missions in Crackdown are comprised of collecting two types of orbs from the gang leaders of the three separate gang factions in this open world game. Where is the fun in that, you ask? The adventure is in the exploration of what initially seems like a limited world to move in but you soon find that your power-ups propel you to the tops of buildings where you can jump around exponentially like Spiderman.

Your agility level is amazing to experience, making exploration easier and extremely enjoyable.

With three levels, Crackdown plays best when you work your way through the gangs methodically, blasting them out of the world with firearms, grenades, and rockets. Your skill levels increase as you use them more and more, enabling you to gain in agility, jumping ability, and strength. Cars become available for you to jump with and even heave around like so much balsa wood.

The look of Crackdown is spectacular, with buildings particularly well drawn in detail. Draw distances are more than adequate and frequently very impressive. Sound effects impress as well, especially in the explosion areas. The narrator’s voice becomes monotonous rapidly and, as the story has little or no bearing on the game’s progression, grows increasingly superfluous.

For obsessive players, orb collecting will be the end all and be all. You will not rest until you have worked your way through all three difficulty levels and all of the side missions. For other gamers, Crackdown will not hold much long-term interest because of a lack of story intrigue and the simplicity of the mission. Make an informed decision regarding rent or purchase.
