Dance Dance Revolution Universe 2: Not Revolutionary

January 7, 2008 | Filed Under Game Reviews |

Evidently the creators of the Dance Dance Revolution Universe don’t feel the need to change the mechanics of the game, but rather believe that changing track listings will suffice.

For some dancers, this may be just the ticket to hours more enjoyment, shaking their groove thang, but the same game has been sold for the last ten years with little or no upgrades. The burnout factor grows with each new reissue.

Dance Dance Revolution Universe 2 has a variety of modes tailored for the beginner as well as the advanced. A very nice tutorial presents the novice (or the inhibited) with the building blocks to be successful and then segues easily into Game Mode Lite. For the more adventurous, Game Mode (reached through Master Mode) has a more flexible feel to its song choices. In Quest Mode, you will be able to unlock more songs but this soon grows onerous.

The background visuals are as flashy as they should be, but the payoff for hitting all the right steps involves buying clothes for your avatar to meet the next challenge. In other words, not much of a payoff.

The sole attraction in Dance Dance Revolution Universe 2 is the track list. Featuring lesser-known songs, the carefully selected play list shows varied and infectious rhythms throughout. For exercise buffs, extended tracks will get your heart rate up. As an extra dividend, the tracks are good enough to play just as background music while you do something else around the house.

Dance Dance Revolution Universe 2 needs to be brought into the next century with more innovative game play.
